CONSTRUCTION MANAGEMENT OF THE INTERVENTION IN THE BCIN - CALONGE CASTLE (BAIX EMPORDÀ)
A proposal was developed to complete the rehabilitation process of the Castle of Calonge in a careful and respectful manner, both towards the building itself and the previous interventions.
This is the finishing phase (Phase 3) of a rehabilitation project for a public facility building intended for cultural use (Calonge Castle), located at Plaça Major No. 1 in the municipality of Calonge i Sant Antoni, in the Baix Empordà region. The project was promoted by the local municipal council.
As part of the improvement works, a walkway was installed on structural profiles anchored to the walls to allow visitors to view the archaeological remains. Prior to this, a professional archaeological assessment was conducted by qualified experts to determine whether the remains held heritage value and required enhancement. The intervention also included the treatment of the stone masonry and the installation or restoration of glazing in the arrow slits. Lighting, signage, fire protection systems, and the repair or replacement of handrails and other safety features were also implemented.
In the castle towers, wall and flooring treatments were carried out to improve accessibility, along with the installation of lighting.
On the attic floor of the southern wing, the roof was restored, and the flooring, lighting, and signage were reinstated. Accessibility between this space and the upper levels above the tourist office was improved by replacing a wooden beam. A new doorway was created to connect this space with the top floor of the cultural-use building, and lighting was installed.
On the upper floors above the tourist office, non-structural walls and staircases were demolished, the flooring was reinstated in the affected areas, and the space was adapted and conditioned for office use. In the exterior areas, such as the terrace over the parade ground, handrails and lighting were restored. Along the outer edge of the parade ground, a sloped concrete slab with a drain was constructed to improve water drainage and surface conditions.
