REHABILITATION OF THE FORMER MARFÀ WORKSHOPS IN GIRONA

Rehabilitation of the Former Can Marfà Workshop in Girona.
We won the tender from the Girona City Council for the design and construction management of the building’s rehabilitation, intended as a space to promote the Santa Eugènia Gardens sector.

The building known as the Former Can Marfà Workshop is intended to be functionally adapted to the existing building. The opportunity to rehabilitate this building and adapt it to new needs represents a significant improvement for the neighborhood, as it would provide a space to promote the local horticultural sector.

The new proposal aims to develop a more diversified tourist product with added value: contributing to the circular economy, local production, and also agrotourism, improving accessibility and monitoring tourist flows. In 2017, the former factory maintenance workshop became part of the industrial heritage of Santa Eugènia, Girona, and Catalonia. Its importance within the factory's operation, which could not stop, was marked by an independent, high-quality building that provided a continuous service ensuring the ongoing textile production.

The project was funded by the "Recovery, Transformation, and Resilience Plan" within the framework of the Next-Generation grants called by the European Union.

The proposal must consider transforming an old workshop hall into an environmentally sustainable building with all energy efficiency measures that make it viable and affordable for the Girona City Council, which will lead the project through its Urban Planning and Economic Promotion departments.

At the firm, we worked with renders to verify materials, techniques, finishes, and textures for the proposal. The ultimate goal was to recover a representative piece of industrial heritage. Our project proposed recovering the entire historic roof’s visual, including ceramic trusses, wrought iron pillars, and the exterior walls in their original red color, featuring large openings and slender wooden joinery. This is combined with contemporary materials and light finishes in the intervention of the administrative core of the facility, thus alternating the more substantial original elements with current contributions that are lighter and more transparent in nature.
