In 1891, the new location for the cemetery was decided. The project was commissioned the following year, in 1892, to the architect Joaquim Artau i Fàbregas. The construction of the new cemetery in the late nineteenth century was driven by a wealthy section of the population and the ties of the families to which they belonged were often related to the Americas, overseas trade and the consequent wealth it generated. . These were directly linked to the Barcelona bourgeoisie, which led to the participation in the project of renowned architects such as Puig i Cadafalch.

For the distribution of the spaces, J.Artau reinterprets the urban tendencies of the great nineteenth-century cities inside the "city of the dead": avenues, walks, squares, blocks of houses ... The whole space of the cemetery it is organized by guidelines of social hierarchy. On the main avenue are the tombs of private clients, the Indians. On the right and left side of the main avenue, the second and third category hypogeums are distributed. Away from this area, there is a space for civil burials and another for the unbaptized.
