The Town Hall building is the result of a reconstruction of an old manor house acquired in 1624, with origins dating back to the 14th century. This reconstruction was carried out between 1941 and 1944, based on a project by the architect Adolf Florensa, and was funded by the industrialist Compte i Viladomat.
Cardona’s town hall is a historicist building constructed in 1944 over a 14th-century structure, as previously mentioned. The renovation works carried out in the 1990s show certain shortcomings in terms of functionality, sustainability, and overall conservation.
The proposed project focused on four key aspects of the building: improving energy efficiency through interventions on the façades and roof; bringing the building into compliance with accessibility regulations and eliminating architectural barriers; reorganizing the ground floor layout to bring public administration services closer to the citizens and introducing new functional criteria; and, finally, acting on the external façades to restore historic stuccoes and the traditional finishes typical of historic buildings in inland Catalonia.
The proposal aims to enhance the value of this emblematic historic building, which is officially listed as a Local Cultural Heritage Site. It also serves as a landmark in the city’s urban landscape, with its Renaissance-style tower harmoniously blending into its surroundings. The proposed intervention was carefully considered, cost-effective, and respectful of the historic character of the building.
