Monistrol de Calders is a municipality in the Moianès region, located at the headwaters of the Calders stream, which is formed by the confluence of the Marfà (or Golarda), Sant Joan, and l’Om streams. The village of Monistrol lies in a small valley. The Monistrol valley is bordered to the east by the southern edge of the Moianès plateau, from which all the aforementioned streams originate, with altitudes ranging between 620 m and 694 m. To the west, the boundary is marked by a small mountain ridge that stretches from la Mussarra to beyond Sant Pere Màrtir, with peaks ranging from 684 m to 564 m. In 1992, 334 hectares of the municipality were declared part of the Sant Llorenç del Munt i l’Obac Natural Park.
The village is made up of three distinct areas resulting from historical urban growth. The original settlement was established around the sagrera (church-centered hamlet) of the parish church of Sant Feliu. This core is located on the left bank of the Sant Joan stream. On the right bank, at the lower part of the Collet hill and near the stream, lies the neighbourhood of Poble Avall, which originated in the 17th century along the path that connected to Calders. The last area of the historic centre is Poble Amunt, made up of the streets of la Vinya, Sant Llogari, la Mallola, el Torrent, and el Serrat. This area resulted from the expansion during the 18th and 19th centuries. The rest of the municipality features several examples of traditional farmhouses (masies), chapels, and dry-stone structures.
